More Options to Give, Benefit from Year-End Tax Savings

Posted By Bradley Carlson, Director of Development, Monday, December 12, 2022

As you know, for 100 years ROA has been the only organization solely dedicated to supporting the Reserve Components and their critical role in national defense; and, together, ROA's members sound off in one voice for one mission.

As we approach the end of the calendar year there are opportunities for donors to benefit from tax savings based on their charitable giving. In addition, your gift may qualify for a tax break this year when you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return.

Because you might have a lot going on in the final weeks of 2022, we wanted to make you aware of some important deadlines . . .

CONSIDER THESE GIFT OPTIONS:

IRA / 401k - If you are 70½ or older, you can give any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to ROA. You will not pay income taxes on the transfer. If you are required to take minimum distributions, you can use this transfer to satisfy your obligation.

Deadline Considerations: We must receive your gift by Dec. 31. If you have check-writing features on your IRA, your check must clear your account by Dec. 31 to count toward your required minimum distribution for the calendar year. CLICK HERE for the details your plan administrator will require for a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA/401k.

Appreciated Stock - Avoid paying taxes on the appreciated value and qualify for an income tax charitable deduction based on today’s market value when you itemize.

Deadline Considerations: Complete the transfer by Dec. 31. CLICK HERE for the details you will need.

Year-End Donations - If you mail a check, it must be dated and postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before December 31, 2022, to qualify for a tax deduction this year. If you use a credit card, the gift is considered to be made on the date of the charge, regardless of when you pay your credit card bill.

Deadline Considerations: If you would like to make a gift before the end of the year CLICK HERE.

Additional Year-End Action Items:

  • Will or living trust - Review your will or trust for any life changes such as birth, death, marriage, or a move to a different state.
  • Durable powers of attorney - Make sure these documents for financial matters and for healthcare are current. A copy of your financial power of attorney should be given to your family members; while a copy of your healthcare power of attorney should be provided to both family members and healthcare providers.
  • Retirement plan beneficiaries - Review and remove any beneficiary on your life insurance or retirement plan who is deceased or is a former spouse. Consider adding a nonprofit such as ROA.
  • Life insurance policy - If you have a policy that is no longer a significant piece of your estate plan, consider making a gift by assigning ownership to ROA or making us the beneficiary.
  • Bank or brokerage accounts - Name designated heirs or ROA as a recipient of bank or brokerage account proceeds at your death.*
  • Charitable contributions - If you have included a gift to ROA in your estate plan, review the details of your gift and let us and your loved ones know of your intentions. This will guarantee your wishes are carried out after your lifetime.
  • Safe deposit box - Catalog the contents of your safe-deposit box. Give a written copy to a trusted family member and note any items you are holding for someone else.
  • Digital estate - Your online accounts' usernames and up-to-date passwords, along with your smartphone and tablet passcodes, home security code, and similar data should either be recorded in password-management software or on paper in a fireproof lockbox. Tell someone you trust how to access these.

*State laws govern payable-on-death accounts and transfer-on-death accounts. Please consult with your bank representative or investment advisor if you are considering these gifts.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP . . .

As we approach year-end, we are happy to help ensure you get the most benefit. Please contact Brad Carlson at (800) 809-9448 or plannedgiving@roastars.org.

Thank you once again for your support of ROA and ROA STARs Foundation. Your support is especially generous given the economy has been tough this year. You are a true patriot.

#GivingTuesday Nets $1,600 for STARs in Schools Program

Posted By Kalen Arreola, Director of Communications, ROA, Wednesday, December 7, 2022

Each year many organizations vie for donations during the annual #GivingTuesday day of giving.

ROA again committed all funds raised during the campaign to the STARs in Schools program to support students of Reserve and Guard families.

These students present unique needs that impact their academic, social, and emotional well-being.

It is estimated that more than 1.2 million students in our schools today have a parent who is deployed for active duty in the U.S. Military—frequently the parent may be in a dangerous area of the world and very far away. When a parent is deployed, the family makes great sacrifices, which create significant challenges for the children in the family.

Schools may also consider how the circumstances of these students, and the resources included on this site, can also be used to help other students understand the complexities of protecting our country and assist in engaging all students in being empathetic and engaged citizens.

Tennessee Chapter Leadership Continues Annual Tradition of Community Service

Posted By ROA Staff, Wednesday, December 7, 2022

Past ROA National Presidents John and Judi Davenport share their annual tradition of being "bell ringers" for the Salvation Army.

In most locations across the Midwest, from early November through Christmas Eve, one way to give back to the local community is to ring a bell at one of the Salvation Army's iconic red kettles.

Volunteer bell ringers are the difference between an empty kettle and one that raises the funds that sustain the help we give all year long.

The Salvation Army relies on money raised in red kettles to serve more than 25 million people in need each year.

Thank you to John and Judi for representing ROA every year while giving back!

Support ROA STARs in Schools this #GivingTuesday 🇺🇸

Posted By Kalen Arreola, Director of Communications, ROA, Tuesday, November 29, 2022

Today, November 29, 2022, people around the world will come together to participate in a global day of giving – called GivingTuesday . . .

This year, we ask that you join us to ensure that children of America's Reserve Forces are supported when their loved ones are deployed at home or abroad by giving to the ROA STARs in Schools - School Kit Program.

In fact, we have set a goal to raise $5,000 in just 24 hours! Thanks to supporters like you, we believe this is possible.

Will you help us?

When called to duty, members of the Reserve and National Guard, our citizen-warriors, put their civilian lives on hold. Most reside outside of a military base and work for civilian employers. Of the 1.2 million school-age children of our nation’s service members, most (more than 80%) attend public schools.

Although many of these schools are near military installations, many more are not. In fact, 625,000 children of Reserve and National Guard members attend schools located in areas with no military installations or supporting organizations nearby. The schools that serve these children have a sincere desire to help, but necessary support is not always available.

This is where the ROA STARs in Schools Program comes in!

We provide resources for educators, school staff, and parents to help them better understand the unique needs of military children with deployed parents.

How can I support my Reserve & Guard Families?

1. Follow us and share on social media - #GivingTuesday:

2. Make your donation by midnight on Tuesday, November 29. Are you in?

Blunt, Peters Introduce Resolution Honoring 100th Anniversary of the Reserve Officers Association

Posted By Kalen Arreola, Director of Communications, ROA, Thursday, October 6, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – LAST WEEK, U.S. SENATORS ROY BLUNT (MO.) AND GARY PETERS (MICH.) INTRODUCED A RESOLUTION TO HONOR THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RESERVE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION, NOW KNOWN AS THE RESERVE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA.

“I commend the Reserve Organization of America for all the work they do to support the men and women who have done so much to keep our country safe, strong, and free,” said Senator Blunt. “I’m proud to join Senator Peters to introduce this resolution honoring the first 100 years of ROA, and I look forward to the great work they will continue to do over the next 100 years.”

“As a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I'm proud to work with Senator Blunt on this bipartisan commemoration of the Reserve Organization of America's 100th anniversary” said Senator Peters. “For the last century, ROA has been a key ally in support of our Reserves and National Guard. Their strong advocacy for national security, readiness, and the wellbeing of our reserve component servicemembers, veterans and military families has helped strengthen our military and we look forward to their continued work ahead.”

About ROA

Since 1922, The Reserve Officers Association of the United States, now known as the Reserve Organization of America to reflect its all-ranks membership, has championed the cause of the Reserve Components at home and in war. The evolution of that mission has helped protect the rights and benefits of individual members of the Reserve force and their families, while preserving a strong and capable Reserve force as a critical component to our national security. ROA continues to serve the Reserve and National Guard in an era where the need is greater than ever before.

For 100 years, ROA has been the only organization solely dedicated to supporting the Reserve Components and their critical role in national defense. ROA is America’s only exclusive advocate for the Reserve and National Guard – all ranks, all services. With a sole focus on support of the Reserve and Guard, ROA promotes the interests of Reserve Component members, their families, and veterans of Reserve service; and conducts a legislative campaign that ensures the readiness of our Reserve force. Together, ROA’s members sound off in one voice for one mission.
